2010 - Los Angeles! Working behind the Lens and Chasing Dreams

After a big whirlwind trip this past month studying photography in Paris and Milan, I'm now in Los Angeles and ready to hit the ground running in 2010. I'm making a transition in life to go "all in" and to pursue my dreams back in the States, focusing on my photography, fitness, and entrepreneur plans.

I want to take a moment to thank those for enriching my photography knowledge and giving me the cutting edge. Got to give credit when credit is due and these individuals are not only highly regarded in their field but also dear friends.

To Joel Dart, Paris fashion photographer and Professor: You gave me the opportunity to study with you in Paris for a number of days during a big multi-day beauty/hair shoot with gorgeous European models, top stylists, and makeup artists (and even jump in front of the camera a bit!). And not to mention all of the post production skills that you taught me... a million euro education in my book. But most of all, thank you for the encouragement and firm input/direction to do this right.

To Emanuel Van Holsten, Milan Glamour King: Emanuel!! What more can I say, your camera sees me in the most explosive way. You know this business very well, having worked with some of the biggest international clients such as Playboy, Marie Claire, Wolford, etc, and I highly admire your business acumen. To Wim Vanderwegen, Belgian Advertising Photographer and Professor: You were one of the first people that I met when I moved to Belgium and I'll always cherish all of the fun times, learning, and the work that we created together. I can never stop admiring your post production skill, creativity, lighting, etc that you brilliantly demonstrate, for example in the BMW and PlayStation ads. BTW, remember those talks about getting to the States? Well guess who's in LA now. ;)

"Colin and Graham's Excellent Adventures" at the MuscleMania Euro Championships

So apparently there were the two Irish clowns from the TV show "Colin and Graham's Excellent Adventures" at the MuscleMania Euro Championships. I thought something was peculiar about them as they were first timers who didn't even plan a routine for their category. Got wind from my buddy who saw me on Irish TV the other night LOL. Here's a YouTube clip of my "interview" with them right after the show.



They keep zooming in on the former Mr. Venezuela BBer judge who's laughing his ass off at their performance in this video.

An Evening in Torino

Last Saturday was my last evening in Torino, which I spent with the Italian Wizard Dr. Marco Zanetti, Alex Maggi, and a few of their friends. We had a nice Christmas evening out walking around Europe's largest plaza which was decorated in lights, then off to a wine bar to have a Martini drink and some appetizers. I took a picture of the plate because the snacks were so appealing. One in particular was what I called Italian sushi: ricotta cheese with avocado centers wrapped with seaweed paper. Also there were salami, fociaccia cheese bread, a tuna spread with artichoke. So delicious!

Beauty Shoot with Joel Dart, Paris FRANCE.

I'm in town to do study with Joel Dart as an assistant (coffee gopher, etc) on an full team test shoot for a major hair campaign. In addition to helping out, observing and learning from the photography standpoint, I am getting in front of the lens as well as I have done in the past with him.

The 10 Day Countdown

Whew, moving at light speed over here knocking off the To Do list here in Europe.

I had my last day in the office the other day and it was very nostalgic to have to say goodbye to my awesome colleagues. While my work as a Structured Financial Analyst wasn't a passion of mine, the people I worked with were the best. Really, I made some real friendships there and they were diverse, open, and kind. I'm gonna miss our laughs together. They gave me a sweet fareweIl card and a gift card to Decathlon, the big sports store here! So I picked up a tennis racket and sports bag which will come in super handy in LA where a couple of friends are avid players (ahem Dr. Michael Granberry and Hatem Dhiab!).

Much of my time in Brussels is spent related to the closing of my apartment as the Belgian rent laws are quite strict, as the shipment of my goods, import/insurance/customs paperwork, etc. I'm staying in Antwerp until tomorrow and making the daily hike back/forth to Brussels.

Tomorrow is the beginning of an extemely productive week (yeah my weeks start on Friday haha). Wanna hear what a typical day looks like for me?

- 8am shoot as a photog of a young male model
- Noon shoot as a makeup artist to Wim Vanderwegen (Belgium's top advertising tog and a professor)
- 2pm closing of my apartment
- 4pm drive to Paris 3 hours away for working during the weekend as model and tog.

I'm finally going to get my study in as a photographer assistant to high fashion photographer Joel Dart until Sunday with two magazine assignments. And looking forward to getting in front of his uber talented eye as well.

Then I'm going to have a shoot on Monday with the Parisian actor and Rob Lowe lookalike, Anthony Dupray. He's one hell of a model as well and we are going to create an editorial with both of us taking control of the camera. I have never photgraphed an actor before and I can see that he brings something special to images. I'm excited about the storyboard and know that you are going to love it.

Then it's off to Milan! Milan is always in my heart, who can resist the allure of Italy? Some planning with my business partner, the Italian Wizard Dr. Marco Zanetti and spending time with my dear "coach" and muse Maurizzio.

A muse is someone who gives an artist inspiration, passion, and makes you fall in love with them not only because of their beauty but their charm as well. Telihana is my female muse and Maurizzio is my male muse. How lucky I am. They provide me endless sources of creativity and excitement.

Ensuite, off to the United States! A bit of work and travel through there but tentatively the schedule is:

Dec 13-17: Detroit
Dec 17-22: Los Angeles
Dec 22-Jan 17: Florida
New Years Eve: Miami South Beach!
Jan 17: relocate to Los Angeles permanently

I am taking shoot bookings in Florida for those interested. I'm going to be based out of the Tampa area except for New Years in South Beach. And of course I'll start taking bookings in LA starting in February.

Just had a moment of reflection about my change of career and life. I spent my entire professional career as an analytical person, first in IT then in Finance/Treasury. Heavy Excel, UNIX, computer and number crunching. And now I'm flipping over to the Arts. Getting in touch with my romantic side, feelings, expression. And a focus on my physical after so many years sharpening my mind with education and challenging technical assignments. Not that it's all lost because I'm a business person at heart and I'm running the show now. But, it's interesting to take a look at this from a 3rd person perspective.

What a night!! Bopping around Antwerp with my American ladies Hayley and Telihana to Pure and Noxx then after party! The gorgeous Michael Verlackt, Mr. Belgium 2007, and the Smits brothers also made this one jamming night.

ANUGA show with OnGoEnergy.com

So much fun to do an expo when you are in the company of friends. Me, Telihana, Tim K, Manuel, and the OnGo Energy CEO were busting our butts in Cologne Germany working this show. What made this show so fun was that we definitely brought the American energy with our friendly open approach, big smiles, and hyperactivity due to consuming way too many energy drinks. Definitely can say that the Drinks section of the world's biggest food show was waaayyyyy more interesting than the other sections such as meats, dairy, frozen foods, etc. We were also situated next to the alcoholic drinks so you could get loaded by cruising the samples :P

Milan Here I Come!

EVH magazine, an Italian fashion mag, is coming out to do coverage of me while I'm in town to compete. Gotta get my head together to line up shoots Monday/Tues following the competition.

Tomorrow my themewear maker is coming to Brussels from London to hand deliver my costume and polish up my routine. I can't wait to show off my costume on stage, it's a jaw dropper...!

Also I'm going to do another shoot of Maurizzio while in Milan.  A beautiful half Belgian/Italian and bright as well.... very special person.  I'm hoping to get a real soulful shoot with him; it's amazing what a photographer will capture when they have personal connections to their subjects. 

My schedule until December is intimidating... going to be working in Germany, Paris, Brussels, and travel 2x to the States for a repatriation look-see, visit my folks in FL, and compete in the World Championships before hauling all of my belongings to LA for good in December.  Getting about 3-4 hours of sleep of night from the stress.  GO GO GO GO

This summer was absolutely amazing: went to Barcelona, Istanbul, Vegas, Tampa, Miami, Orlando, NYC, London, Paris, Reims, Monte Carlo, Antwerp, Liege, Sardinia.  NON STOP Adventures!!!!!

I just got notice that my Banking assignment here is coming to and end in Belgium December 1 and will have to consider relocation back to the States. Usually I am not doing much photography during this time because I'm preparing for a few fitness shows but I've decided to open my schedule to shoot as many as you awesome Europeans that I can! :)

I am a published photographer (Europe and Australia) who specializes in building out model portfolios in the fashion/glamour/beauty direction and have learned the craft from my own experience working as a model in Europe and North America.
